PHIL Liberia Launches Community Health Awareness Campaign on Drug and Substance Abuse and WASH Education in Maryland County

HARPER CITY, Maryland County, Liberia — The Progressive Health Initiative of Liberia (PHIL Liberia) officially launched its Community Health Awareness Campaign on Drugs and Substance Abuse and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Education on July 18, 2026, at Caritas Hall in Harper City. The launch brought together community leaders, health partners, and residents to mark the beginning of a multi-month effort to strengthen public health awareness across Maryland County.

The campaign is designed to reach approximately 5,000 residents across four target communities — New Kru Town, Old Kru Town, New Harper, and Middle Cess — through community engagement sessions, radio programming, and field education activities running from July through September 2026.

Launch Highlights

The launch session at Caritas Hall drew participation from key institutional partners, including the Coordinator of the Ministry of Gender and Child Protection’s Maryland sub-office, representatives of the Partners In Health (PIH) Mental Health Department, and community leaders and stakeholders from across the target communities.

The event served as a formal platform to introduce the campaign’s objectives, present branded campaign materials, and outline the roles of community volunteers and partner institutions in the months ahead.

About the Campaign

The Community Health Awareness Campaign addresses two interconnected public health priorities in Maryland County: the rising concern of drug and substance abuse, and the ongoing need for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education. Through this integrated approach, PHIL Liberia aims to equip residents, particularly youth and vulnerable groups with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed, healthy choices.

Campaign activities include:

• Community engagement and education sessions across the four target communities
• Volunteer-led field outreach using structured talking scripts
• Radio programming through PHIL Health Hour on Radio Cape Palmas 92.1 MHz
• Distribution of branded campaign materials, including T-shirts, caps, and banners

Campaign Partners

The campaign is being implemented in partnership with the Partners In Health (PIH) Mental Health Department, the Maryland County Health Team, and the Ministry of Gender and Child Protection’s Maryland County Chapter.
