Improve Health, Save Lives by Giving

In 2025, the Progressive Health Initiative of Liberia (PHIL Liberia) launched the “Improve Health, Save Lives by Giving” campaign, a targeted humanitarian response designed to address critical gaps in menstrual and sanitary hygiene access among vulnerable populations in Maryland County, Liberia.

Through this initiative, PHIL Liberia distributed essential sanitary hygiene materials to carefully selected schools and health clinics, identified through a structured vulnerability assessment process. This selection methodology ensured that resources reached the communities and individuals with the greatest need, maximizing the impact of every donation.

Our Approach

The initiative was built on PHIL Liberia’s core conviction that access to basic hygiene resources is not a privilege but a fundamental component of health equity. By focusing on schools, the campaign worked to reduce hygiene-related school absenteeism among adolescent girls, a persistent barrier to educational continuity across rural Liberia. By extending support to clinics, PHIL Liberia helped strengthen frontline health facilities’ capacity to support patients with dignity and adequate resources.

Why It Matters

Lack of access to sanitary hygiene materials remains a significant, often overlooked driver of health disparities, particularly for women and girls in underserved communities. Poor menstrual hygiene management can lead to missed school days, social stigma, and increased health risks. Through “Improve Health, Save Lives by Giving,” PHIL Liberia took direct, measurable action to close this gap; one community, one school, and one clinic at a time.
